Internally referred to as G60, the next-gen BMW 5 Series was recently spotted on a road test in Germany. The BMW 5 Series will be offered in three variants – plug-in hybrid (PHEV), fully electric (i5), and the traditional combustion engine. It is also set to get significant upgrades throughout the exterior.

With the new 5 series, BMW seems to have cooled off on the large kidney grilles. While they are still of a considerable size, they’re not as massive as the ones offered on the 7 series. The sleek headlights give the car a very premium look. On the side, BMW seems to have remodelled the door handles for the 5 Series. The tail lights seem to have been tweaked as well.
Every variant of the BMW 5 Series will get its own custom badge. The fully electric version will receive the ‘i5’ badge, while the plug-in hybrid gets a PHEV sticker. The BMW 5 Series will be offered in four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The plug-in variant will also come in four and six-cylinder electric engines. The fully electric variant is expected to get a 100kWh battery pack and can generate a maximum power of 500hp.
BMW may also launch a BMW 5 Series Touring, which is going to be a station wagon. The launch is expected to take place after the sedan makes its debut. It remains to be seen whether the BMW 5 Series Touring will come in a fully electric variant as well.
The spy shots do not reveal any glimpse of the interior, although it is assured that the BMW 5 Series will be laden with state-of-the-art BMW tech. We may also see interiors inspired by the 7 Series. This would mean a curved screen infotainment system that runs on BMW’s iDrive 8 operating system.
