Volvo C40 Recharge unveiled in India, launch scheduled for August

Volvo has taken the wraps off its all-electric SUV coupe in India, the Volvo C40 Recharge. This is Volvo’s second electric offering in India after the XC40 Recharge which was launched in July 2022. The electric SUV will be officially launched in August. The automaker will begin delivering the SUV a month after its launch.

Volvo C40 Recharge: What’s on offer?

Apart from the powertrain, the biggest difference on the Volvo C40 Recharge is the sloping roofline which gives the SUV a coupe-like look. The tailgate and rear windscreen get a new design as well. The wraparound tail lamps are now sleeker. Up front, the C40 Recharge gets the signature Thor’s Hammer LED DRLs. Since it is an all-electric SUV, the radiator grille has been shut off. Along the sides, the SUV rests on 19-inch alloys.

Inside, the Volvo C40 Recharge shares a lot of similarities with the XC40 Recharge. It gets a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system locked into portrait orientation. This infotainment system gets an Android-based OS which comes with Google Maps, Assistant, and other apps from Google Play Store. Other features include a Harmon Kardon sound system, a 360-degree camera, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, powered front seats, dual-zone climate control, and ADAS features like autonomous driving.

Volvo C40 Recharge shares its platform and powertrain with the XC40 Recharge. This means the electric SUV is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) Platform. Powering the C40 Recharge is a dual electric motor that generates a maximum power output of 408hp and 660Nm of torque. The 78kWh battery pack on the C40 Recharge offers a driving range of 530km. This battery pack can be fully charged with a 150kW charger in just over 30 minutes.

Conclusion

It remains to be seen whether Volvo will offer the C40 Recharge with a single-motor RWD powertrain option in India. The XC40 Recharge is offered in a dual-motor configuration only. While Volvo has not mentioned the price for the SUV yet, it is expected to cost around Rs 60 lakh. This would make it pricier than its own ICE sibling and the XC40 Recharge. Upon launch, Volvo C40 Recharge will rival the likes of Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
