994 units of Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder recalled following a seatbelt issue

Toyota Kirloskar is recalling 994 units of the recently launched Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder after the automaker spotted an issue with the seat belt shoulder height adjuster. The HyRyder was launched in September at a starting price of Rs 15.11 lakh. Last month, the automaker also announced a CNG variant for the midsize SUV.

Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder’s cousin Grand Vitara likely to be recalled as well

While no HyRyder owners have come across this issue, the automaker spotted a defect in the front seat belt shoulder height adjuster that could possibly lead to total disassembly. According to Toyota, the HyRyder units manufactured between November 9 to November 26 2022 are likely to have this issue.

As a result, Toyota Kirloskar has recalled 994 units of the HyRyder to ensure the seat belt adjuster is fixed. The automaker will track down the affected units and replace the defective parts. HyRyder owners can also get their cars checked for this issue at Toyota service centres across the country. Since Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is jointly manufactured with the HyRyder at Toyota’s plant in Bidadi, it is affected by this issue as well. Maruti Suzuki has recalled nearly 9,000 units of the Grand Vitara.

The HyRyder is available in two powertrain options – Neo Drive (mild-hybrid) and self-charging strong-hybrid electric. The Neo Drive comes with Suzuki’s 1.5L K15C petrol engine that can generate a power of 101bhp and 135Nm of torque. The strong-hybrid sports a 1.5L engine with Toyota hybrid System. The petrol engine generates up to 91bhp power with 122Nm of torque, with the electric motor producing up to 79bhp power with 141Nm of torque. It is also equipped with a 177.6V lithium-ion battery. Toyota claims a mileage of 27.97 kmpl for the strong hybrid setup of the Urban Cruiser HyRyder.

Inside, the dual–tone dashboard flaunts a premium leather finish and gets a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a digital cluster. The HyRyder also gets other features such as wireless phone charging, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, front-ventilated seats, connected car tech, and more. Safety features include 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, hill descent control, and vehicle stability control.

The Urban Cruiser HyRyder is currently available in four trims – E, S, G, and V – with mild hybrid and strong hybrid configurations. In the current midsize SUV market, the Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder competes against Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
