Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder: Design, Features, and Powertrains

The Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder sports a menacing front look with the hulking LED headlamps that perfectly merge into the crystal acrylic grille. The grille itself seems inspired by Glanza. The LED DRLs have a prominent chrome bar separating them. A smaller chrome strip can also be found at the rear, bridging the inverted C-shaped light guides. The strong hybrid variants will also get ‘Hybrid’ badging along the sides. The HyRyder is available in seven single-tone and four dual-tone exterior colour schemes.

Inside, the HyRyder shares design features with its Maruti counterpart, Brezza. The dual–tone dashboard flaunts a premium leather finish and gets a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a digital cluster. The HyRyder also gets other features such as wireless phone charging, panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, front ventilated seats, connected car tech, and more. Safety features include 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, hill descent control, and vehicle stability control.

Coming to the most unique feature, the HyRyder will be made available in two powertrain options – Neo Drive (mild-hybrid) and self-charging strong-hybrid electric. The mild-hybrid configuration will be offered on all four variants while the strong hybrid configuration has been reserved for the top three variants.

The Neo Drive comes with Suzuki’s 1.5L K15C petrol engine that can generate a power of 101bhp and 135Nm of torque. The strong-hybrid sports a 1.5L engine with Toyota hybrid System. The petrol engine generates up to 91bhp power with 122Nm of torque, with the electric motor producing up to 79bhp power with 141Nm of torque. It is also equipped with a 177.6V lithium-ion battery. Toyota claims a mileage of 27.97 kmpl for the strong hybrid setup of the Urban Cruiser HyRyder.

Bookings for the Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder have been underway since July at a token amount of Rs 25,000. Toyota is offering an 8-year/160000km (whichever comes first) warranty on the strong-hybrid battery. In the current midsize SUV market, the Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder will compete against Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
