New Maruti MPV based on Toyota Innova HyCross to launch next year

Since last year, several reports have mentioned a new Maruti MPV being in the works. This new MPV from Maruti will be based on Toyota HyCross and will become the first Toyota vehicle to be rebadged as a Maruti product under the Suzuki-Toyota global partnership. The new reports that have now emerged point towards a 2024 release for Maruti.

What to expect from the new Maruti MPV?

As mentioned above, the new Maruti MPV will be based on Toyota HyCross, making it the first Maruti car to be based on a Toyota product as a part of the Suzuki-Toyota collaboration that started in 2017. Since the two automakers have forged a new alliance, Toyota has rebadged the Vitara Brezza as Urban Cruiser and Baleno as Glanza. In Europe, Suzuki rebadges Toyota’s RAV-4 and Corolla Wagon as A-Cross and Swace. Ciaz, Ertiga, and Celerio are also rebadged as Toyota cars in some foreign markets.

Since it is based on the HyCross, the new Maruti MPV will be underpinned by Toyota’s TNGA-C platform. It will also get the same powertrain and gearbox as the HyCross. The two cars will differ in terms of styling, as Maruti will go for a different grille, bumper, and headlamp setup for its MPV. The interior layout on Maurti’s MPV will also be different from the one HyCross. Similar to Grand Vitara and HyRyder, the two MPVs will be clad in different upholstery and will offer different features on different variants.

Similar to Grand Vitara, the new Maruti MPV will also be built at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Bidadi. Maruti has confirmed that it will be rebadging a Toyota vehicle in the form of an MPV. It also confirmed that the vehicle will have the option of a strong hybrid powertrain. Further details will be made public as we get closer to the launch.

Conclusion

The new Maurti MPV can undercut the HyCross in terms of pricing. Its trim placement will also be different from Toyota’s. Expect a similar pattern as the Grand Vitara and HyRyder. Upon launch, Maruti’s MPV will rival Toyota Innova HyCross, Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV700, and Kia Carnival.
