Mercedes AMG SL 55 Roadster launched in India

The new Mercedes AMG SL 55 Roadster has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 2.35 crore. The model is being imported to India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). The SL 55 Roadster is the newest Mercedes AMG offering after the AMG E 53 Cabriolet and AMG GT 63 S E Performance. It replaces the 6th-gen AMG SL.

Mercedes AMG SL 55 Roadster: What’s new?

Starting with the dimensions, the Mercedes AMG SL 55 Roadster is 4,705mm long, 1,915mm wide, and 1,359mm tall. It is a visibly larger vehicle than its predecessor across the board. The SL 55 Roadster has a 2,700mm wheelbase, which is 117mm larger than the previous-generation model.

In terms of design, the new Mercedes AMG SL 55 Roadster gets the signature Panamericana grille flanked on either side by angular LED headlights. It also gets a wide bonnet with two power domes, all-black OVRMs and alloy wheels, an adjustable spoiler, and quad exhausts. The automaker is also offering an option of 21-inch alloys.

The triple-layer fabric roof on the new SL 55 Roadster is lighter than the previous generation. Being a soft top, it is 21kg lighter than the metal roof on the outgoing version. It can be opened or closed in 15 seconds using the switch or the infotainment system. The roof is available in three colours – Black, Dark Red, and Grey.

Inside, the Mercedes AMG SL 55 Roadster gets an 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is mounted in portrait orientation. This infotainment system gets Mercedes’ MBUX OS.  There is also a 12.3-inch driver display on board. There are five upholstery options on offer – Black Nappa leather with an option of microfibre with red or yellow stitching, Truffle Brown Nappa leather, and Sienna Brown Nappa leather. Buyers also get to choose from two seat options – AMG sports seats and AMG performance seats.

Under the hood, the Mercedes AMG SL 55 Roadster gets a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo, V8 petrol engine that produces a maximum power output of 476hp and 700Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox. The Roadster also gets Mercedes’ 4MATC+ system. It can go from 0-100kmph in 3.9 seconds and can attain a top speed of 295kmph.

Conclusion

As mentioned earlier, the Mercedes AMG SL 55 Roadster will be imported to India as a CBU. It is manufactured at the automaker’s facility near Stuttgart. With a price tag of Rs 2.35 crore, the Roadster will rival Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet and Lexus LC 500h in India.
