New MG4 Electric Hatchback Revealed, Will Rival Volkswagen ID.3

MG Motors revealed its new electric offering, the MG4. Launched earlier in China under the name of MG Mulan, the electric hatchback will go into direct competition with the Volkswagen ID.3 internationally. The ID.3 is one of Volkswagen’s bestselling EVs internationally, and it remains to be seen how the MG4 will carve out a market share for itself.

The MG4 is based on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), developed by the parent company SAIC Motors. According to MG, this platform can support wheelbases ranging from 2650-3100mm and batteries ranging from 40-150kWh.

MG4 EV: Design, Powertrain, and more

When comes to design style, the MG4 draws heavy inspiration from the Cyberster roadster concept and is nothing like the MG hatchbacks we’ve seen recently. The sharp front end is highlighted by even sharper LED headlamps, with the rear getting a full-width LED light bar. The bottom of the doors are fixed with tough cladding and the hatch lid features a split-design rear spoiler. With dimensions of 4287x1836x1506mm, the MG4 may not be taller than the Volkswagen ID.3 but it is visibly longer and wider.

Inside, the MG4 will unlock more interior space, thanks to the MSP platform that got rid of the transmission tunnel. It also gets a floating style centre touch console and a compact digital instrument cluster.

The MG4 will come in two battery options, a 51kWh battery pack with a range of 217 miles (350 km), and a 64kWh battery pack with a range of 280 miles (450 km). The 51kWh battery pack can generate a maximum power of 167hp, while the 64kWh battery pack can generate 201hp maximum power.

MG also confirmed that the current 400V architecture may be upgraded to 800V in the future for faster charging, with further developments for MG4 currently in the pipeline. The price and detailed specifications for the MG4 have not been made public yet, but we will get more information when the hatchback is open for booking later this year.
