Ola Electric motorcycle: What to expect?

The details about the Ola Electric motorcycle have not been made public. However, the company claims that it will come out with a series of releases, beginning in 2023, and will compete in the mass, mid-segment, and luxury categories. Speaking about the company’s plans, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said,  “I have studied the Rs 80,000 to Rs 10 lakh motorcycle market and such hyper-segmentation in EVs is not needed. In bikes, there is a lot more room for bringing a new sphere of technology and we will be announcing this by the end of next year.”

Aggarwal went on to say that he wasn’t impressed with the electric motorcycles making their debut in the Indian market. Ola Electric is also expected to make its debut in the electric car market in 2024, having dropped a couple of teasers already this year. Bhavish confirmed that the progress of the EV was on track for a December 2024 launch.

Ola Electric has already started using category 2170 cells and will look to make a permanent shift once it starts its own production. Regarding the growth of the EV scooter market in India in recent years, Bhavish remarked that EVs account for 15% of the entire scooter segment with the numbers reaching as high as 40% in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune.

Conclusion

Ola’s impressive numbers in the electric scooter market also come with shadows of concern. Multiple users report the scooter breaking down out of nowhere despite being fully charged, amidst other concerns. Ola Electric also came out with an entry-level electric scooter last week. The Ola S1 Air was launched at a starting price of Rs 79,999 and is now available at Rs 84,999. The company is looking to compete with popular ICE scooters like Jupiter, Activa, and Access.
