BYD’s first plug-in hybrid to make its debut on June 9

The hybrid model could be the Atto 2 DM-i or Sealion 6 DM-i.

BYD India will reveal its first plug-in hybrid offering in the country on June 9. The automaker dropped a teaser for the car on May 26. As of now, BYD exclusively sells EVs in India. Its portfolio comprises the Sealion 7, eMax 7, Atto 3, and Seal. All of these cars are imported to India as Completely Built Units (CBU). It remains to be seen whether the upcoming offering will be a CBU or CKD (Completely Knocked Down) import.

Here’s what we know about BYD’s plug-in hybrid car so far

BYD’s first plug-in hybrid offering in India could be the Atto 2 DM-i or Sealion 6 DM-i. The Atto 2’s hybrid setup constitutes a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a 7.8kWh or 18kWh battery pack. The 7.8kWh variants generate a maximum power output of 166hp, while the 18kWh variants put out 212hp. Their driving range comes out to 928km and 998km, respectively. In electric-only mode, both SUVs can go up to 39km on a full charge.

In terms of features, the Atto 2 DM-i packs a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. There is support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include a 6-speaker audio system, an AI voice assistant, a 6-way adjustable front passenger seat with built-in heating, an electrically 6-way adjustable heated driver seat, vegan leather upholstery, a heated vegan leather steering wheel, a smart key, V2L charging, and more.

On the safety front, it gets 6 airbags, ISOFIX anchorages, rear parking radar, ABS with EBD, Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), Traction Control System (TCS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and more features as standard. The base variant comes with a rear camera while the top-spec model has a 360-degree camera.

The Sealion 6 DM-i is positioned above the Atto 2 DM-i. It comes in 2 powertrain options  – 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. Both engines can be opted with an 18.3kWh or 26.6kWh battery pack. The NA petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 218hp. It is only available with a FWD configuration. In electric-only mode, it can go up to 140km. Meanwhile, the turbo petrol engine, available with an AWD configuration, puts out 344hp. It has an electric-only driving range of 128km. The combined driving range of the SUV comes out to 1,092km.

The Sealion 6 hybrid gets a 15.6-inch electrically rotatable touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include a 10-speaker Infinity sound system, 2 wireless charging pads, a Heads Up Display (HUD), ambient lighting, voice control, rear AC vents, and more. Safety features include 6 airbags, ISOFIX anchorages, ABS with EBD, TCS, ESP, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Auto Hold, and more.

Final Thoughts

If BYD chooses to launch the Atto 2 DM-i in India, it could be priced around Rs 20 lakh. Meanwhile, the Sealion 6 DM-i could fetch up to Rs 50 lakh. The automaker will start accepting bookings soon after the grand reveal.
