Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder CNG variant announced, bookings open

Toyota has announced a CNG variant for the HyRyder SUV. Upon launch, Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder CNG will become India’s first CNG-powered SUV. Toyota revealed the HyRyder CNG alongside the launch of Glanza’s CNG variant. While the price is yet to be revealed, interested buyers can book the HyRyder CNG for a token amount of Rs 25,000.

Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder CNG: All the details

Powering the Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder CNG is Maruti’s 1.5-litre K15C four-cylinder engine which is also found in the CNG variants of Ertiga and XL6. While Toyota has not revealed any detailed power output figures yet, this engine produces a maximum power of 88hp and 121.Nm of torque on the XL6. The K15C is expected to produce the same numbers as the HyRyder CNG. Like other CNG models on the market, the Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder CNG will also be offered exclusively in manual transmission.

Toyota claims a fuel efficiency of 26.10 km/kg for the HyRyder CNG, which is consistent with its Maruti counterparts. Toyota has also confirmed that the CNG configuration will only be offered on the S and G trims of HyRyder. The G trims sports features like full LED headlights, a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ambient lighting, 17-inch alloy wheels, and more. This will make HyRyder CNG the most premium CNG vehicle in the Indian market.

In other news, Toyota India has discontinued the previous generation Urban Cruiser which was based on Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. It is unlikely that the automaker will rebadge the new Maruti Brezza which was launched earlier this year. The Urban Cruiser was a great success for Toyota, managing average sales of more than 2000 units per month. But with the success of Urban Cruiser HyRyder, it is very unlikely that the previous avatar of the Urban Cruiser will get a new life.

Conclusion

The Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder CNG has no real rivals as of now, but it will soon compete against the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara CNG. The hybrid variants of the HyRyder compete with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and MG Astor.
