Tata Harrier Electric SUV to launch next year

Tata plans on releasing 10 EVs in the next five years, with Harrier and Punch already being tested.

Tata plans on expanding its EV portfolio in India, with 10 electric cars scheduled to release by 2027. Tata Harrier Electric could be one of the EVs to be released in the first phase of this rollout and could see an Indian launch next year. On World EV Day, Tata Motors announced its plans for expansion into the EV market and also officially confirmed that Tata Tiago would be the first to launch under this endeavour. We could also see Punch, Altroz, and Sierra EVs in the future.

Several reports have confirmed that the Tata Harrier Electric SUV is in its initial stages of testing. During this stage, it will be determined whether the SUV performs up to the standard, following which the later testing stages will be greenlit. Reports also suggest that Tata Punch EV is further ahead of the curve, in advanced stages of testing. While there is no word on a definite launch timeline, we expect the Tata Harrier EV to be rolled out by mid to late 2023. The Tata Punch EV could also see a 2023 release.

Announcing its plans on World EV Day, Mr Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. said, “Earlier this year, we had unveiled our 3 phased approach towards building a comprehensive EV portfolio. As we accelerate our future journey, we are committed to launching 10 EVs in different product segments, body styles and affordability levels.”

Tata Motors had also confirmed its plans to launch the Tiago EV, which could share its motor with the Tata Tigor EV’s base variant. This electric motor produces a maximum power of 41hp and 105Nm peak torque.

Earlier in May, Tata had rolled out 3 new variants for the ICE-powered Harrier, namely XZS, XZS Dual Tone and XZS Dark Edition. The Harrier is also due for a facelift and could see a new 1.5L turbo-petrol engine along with updated ADAS features. It remains to be seen how Tata decides the timeline for the rollout of the ICE facelift along with the launch of the Tata Harrier Electric SUV.
