Maruti Suzuki Fronx CNG to launch later this year

Maruti Suzuki Fronx was unveiled at Auto Expo last month and has now been spotted testing in a new CNG avatar. Maruti currently has the biggest CNG portfolio in the country, spanning across its hatchback, sedans, and SUVs. Maruti has announced that it will be launching the Fronx in April this year. It remains to be seen whether the CNG variant will be launched alongside the petrol model.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx CNG: All the details

At its unveiling, Maruti Suzuki Fronx was showcased in two powertrain options – a 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol engine from the 2017 Baleno and a 1.2-litre K Series naturally aspirated petrol engine. The former produces 100hp and 147.6Nm while the latter churns out 90hp and 113Nm peak torque. Both engines can be mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.

In its CNG avatar, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx will only be made available with the 1.2-litre petrol engine. In a CNG configuration, this engine produces a maximum power output of 77hp and 98.5Nm peak torque. This engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with no option for an automatic transmission.

The CNG configuration will be made available only on the middle trims of the Fronx. Cosmetically there will be no difference between the three variants, other than exclusive badging on the CNG variant. Dimensionally, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx stands at 3,995m x 1,550m x 1,765m. The SUV coupe is underpinned by the Heartect monocoque platform, similar to the Baleno hatchback.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx gets the same interior layout as the Baleno. There is a difference in detailing as the Fronx gets a metal-like matte finish with silver chrome highlights. The Fronx also gets the Black and Bordeaux two-tone colour theme for its interior. In terms of features, the compact SUV gets a 9.0-inch Smart Pro Play+ infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Head Up Display, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera.

Conclusion

As mentioned earlier, Maruti will be looking to release the CNG variant of the Fronx alongside the petrol variants. The pricing of the Fronx has not been revealed yet, but it is expected to start at Rs 8 lakh. The CNG variant will be at least Rs 1 lakh more expensive than its petrol counterpart. The Fronx rivals the likes of Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Hyundai Ai3, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.
