Simple Energy to launch two new affordable electric scooters this year

After launching its debut electric scooter last month, Simple Energy has announced that it will further expand its portfolio in India, adding two new affordable electric scooters this year. The EV tech startup is looking to match Ola Electric in every price category as the latter plans to launch the affordable Ola S1 Air this month.

Simple Energy: The plan ahead

Simple One, the debut scooter from Simple Energy is priced at Rs 1.45 lakh. The 750W charger costs Rs 13,000 more. The affordable variants of Simple One could cost anywhere between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.20 lakh. The biggest change on the scooters will be the battery pack. They are expected to come with a smaller battery pack. The 5kWh battery pack on the e-scooter delivers a driving range of 212km, the highest out of all the electric scooters in the Indian market.

The two affordable scooters from Simple Energy could feature different battery pack options. Buyers could get to choose between 2kWh and 3kWh battery pack options. It goes without saying that the two scooters will offer a lower driving range. In comparison, Ola Electric’s S1 Air comes in a single 3kWh variant that offers a driving range of 125km. Simple One’s permanent power motor delivers a maximum power output of 8.5kW and 72Nm or torque. It can achieve a top speed of 105kmph while accelerating from 0-47kmph in just 2.77 seconds. While the automaker hasn’t mentioned any powertrain details, the top speed on the entry-level scooters will be capped at a lower number.

There will be no radical changes to the design of the two scooters. The storage space may take a small hit, but Simple Energy will ensure that the design language remains consistent with the Simple One. In order to cut down costs, the two entry-level electric scooters could sacrifice some features. It remains to be seen which features make it on the production-spec models. Simple One comes with a 7-inch TFT dash and connected tech. It also offers four driving modes – Eco, Ride, Dash, and Sonic. Not all four driving modes are expected to make it to the new scooters.

Conclusion

Simple One is currently available at Rs 1.45 lakh. As mentioned earlier, the 750W home charger costs Rs 13,000 more. Buyers also have to pay a premium of Rs 5,000 for dual-tone colour options. Simple Energy commenced the deliveries of its debut scooter earlier this month. It rivals the likes of Ola S1 Pro, Vida V1 Pro, Ather 450X, TVS iQube, and Bajaj Chetak. The two entry-level variants will primarily rival Ola S1 Air.
