Volkswagen India has announced that it has sold 50,000 units of the Virtus sedan domestically. It took just 28 months for the automaker to accomplish this feat. Volkswagen Virtus made its debut in 2022 and has since sold an average of 60 units every day. It remains the bestselling sedan in India in 2024, having sold 17,000 units so far in the year. Volkswagen will launch a facelifted version of the Virtus in 2025 as a part of its mid-cycle update.

Volkswagen Virtus: India’s bestselling sedan
Volkswagen’s India 2.0 offerings – Virtus and Taigun surpassed the 1 lakh domestic sales milestone in the second quarter of 2024. The automaker crossed the 6.5 lakh domestic wholesale milestone at the end of the third quarter of 2024. Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun contributed to 18.5% of these sales in a span of 3 years.
The two India 2.0 offerings are underpinned by the modular MQB A0 IN platform which is specially designed for the Indian market. Volkswagen Virtus is available in two engine options – 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol and 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol.
The 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 113hp and 175Nm of torque. The engine can be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Meanwhile, the 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine puts out 148hp and 250Nm. This engine can be linked to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT gearbox.

Prices for Volkswagen Virtus start at Rs 11.56 lakh and go up to Rs 19.41 lakh. Apart from having versatile engine options, the Virtus is also one of the safest sedans in India, having achieved a 5-star GNCAP rating in April 2023. It rivals Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and its Skoda cousin, Slavia.
