Volkswagen Tayron: Arriving in India next year

Volkswagen Tayron follows the design language of the newer crop of VW SUVs. Since the SUV is just a larger version of the Tiguan, the automaker has not made any radical changes to its design. The front bumper in the top-spec variant has been slightly reworked to carry a bolder look. The only difference along the sides is the Tayron’s larger profile. The wraparound tail lamps at the back are connected by a light bar.

Volkswagen Tayron stands at dimensions of 4,735mm x 1,859mm x 1,682mm. It is 197mm longer, 17mm wider, and 43mm taller than the Tiguan. It is underpinned by the MQB EVO platform which is also found on the new Skoda Kodiaq SUV.

The similarities continue inside the SUV as well. The dashboard layout of the Volkswagen Tayron is identical to Taigun’s. It features a three-screen setup consisting of an infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, and another display on the passenger’s side. The infotainment system can be controlled by a backlit slider placed at the bottom of the unit. It will run the latest MIB4 OS from Volkswagen. The centre console houses a wireless charging pad, drive selector, audio controls, cupholders, and a storage compartment. The steering wheel is mounted with physical control buttons for the essential functions of the SUV.

The Volkswagen Tayron unveiled in China is powered by the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. This engine produces different outputs in the lower-spec and top-spec variants. In the former, it puts out 184hp and 320Nm. In the top-spec variants, this engine produces a maximum power output of 217hp and 350Nm. It is mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox. The automaker may also add the option of a 2.0-litre diesel engine for the Indian market. The hybrid variant of the SUV will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 19.7kWh battery pack. In electric-only mode, this battery pack offers a driving range of up to 100km.

Conclusion

The China-spec version of the SUV has a 5-seat layout. In India, the Tayron will arrive in a 7-seater configuration. It will be imported via the CKD route. Upon launch, the Volkswagen Tayron will rival the likes of the Jeep Meridian and Skoda Kodiaq.
