Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid Unveiled in India

Toyota has introduced its first flex-fuel car, Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid, for testing in India. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, officially inaugurated the Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid. The car will be India’s first flex-fuel unit, and Toyota plans on testing it extensively before launch. A flex-fuel vehicle is capable of running on multiple types of fuel or even a blended fuel. In foreign markets, the Toyota Corolla Altis is configured to run on E85, an ethanol-blended fuel.

Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid: Everything you need to know

The Toyota Corolla Altis can run on ethanol and petrol, and also comes in a strong hybrid configuration. This makes the vehicle extremely versatile for the Indian market. Powering the Corolla Altis is a 1.8-litre ethanol-ready petrol-hybrid engine that produces a maximum power of 101 bhp and 142 Nm torque. This engine can profess any fuel with an ethanol blending of 20-100%. Available in a strong hybrid configuration, the Corolla Altis is also equipped with a 1.3kWh battery pack that can produce a maximum power of 53.7 kW and 162 Nm torque. The engine is paired with a CVT transmission.

On the outside, the Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid features a slim grille with LED headlamps and J-shaped DRLs on either side. The bumper houses a massive air vent. The rear end sports LED tail lamps connected by a chrome strip. Overall, the design profile of the Corolla Altis looks inspired by the Toyota Camry.

After inaugurating the vehicle, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari took a lap on the Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid. He then spoke about the need for a push towards electric and flex-fuel vehicles to cut down on the pollution caused by ICE-powered vehicles.

Conclusion

Apart from Toyota, other automobile manufacturers like TVS, Bajaj, and Hero are also looking to make a push towards flex-fuel vehicles. Flex-fuel vehicles are already popular in overseas markets like USA, Brazil, and Canada. The Toyota Corolla Altis showcase unit unveiled today was left-hand drive, but the testing will be carried out on right-hand drive models.
