CNG models of Tata Tiago and Tigor to get the dual-cylinder setup

Tata Motors is planning to bring its unique dual-cylinder setup to the CNG models Tata Tiago and Tata Tigor. Tata is the only automaker in the country to employ this setup, having patented the design. The Altroz and Punch were the first CNG models to come with this setup. Both models were showcased at Auto Expo earlier this year.

Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG: Dual-cylinder setup will free up boot space

The unique dual-cylinder setup used by Tata on Altroz and Punch CNG uses two small CNG cylinders that easily fit under the boot floor without compromising the spare wheel. This frees up to 210 litres of boot space. The two cylinders have an individual capacity of 60 litres. The lack of optimum space in the boot is what deters most buyers from buying CNG models. Tata’s unique design for the cylinders has helped boost sales in the country.

Currently, the CNG variants of Tata Tiago and Tigor make use of the single-cylinder setup. Tata has now confirmed that it it will update these two models to the dual-cylinder design. The biggest challenge in adopting the new design is the X0 platform underpinning the two cars. Tata Altroz and Punch are based on ALFA architecture which makes it easier to adopt the twin-cylinder design without sacrificing the spare wheel under the boot floor.

The Altroz and Punch iCNGs are powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that produces a maximum power output of 77hp and 97Nm of torque in CNG mode. In a petrol configuration, this engine produces a maximum power output of 86hp and 113Nm peak torque. Tata offers the Altroz CNG with an electric sunroof, which makes it the only CNG hatchback in India to come with that feature.

Conclusion

Tata Motors may also offer the Nexon SUV with a factory-fitted CNG kit in the coming years. At present, Tata has one of the most diverse powertrain options across the board for any automaker in India. Tata Tiago and Tigor are offered in ICE, all-electric, and CNG powertrains. Tata Tiago EV remains the most affordable all-electric car in India, priced at Rs 8.69 lakh.
