Tata Motors set to hike Tiago EV prices by 4% next month

Tata Motors will be hiking the price of its newest electric offering, Tiago EV, by 3-4% in January 2023. The EV was launched in September at a starting price of Rs 8.49 lakh, making it the most affordable EV in India. It will remain the most affordable EV after the hike as well. Tata will announce the exact pricing next month, but the EV’s prices are expected to be raised by Rs 30,000-35,000.

Increase in battery costs primary reason behind Tiago EV’s price hike

Tata launched the Tiago EV back in September at Rs 8.49, making it clear that it was an introductory price. The auto manufacturer initially planned to offer the EV at the introductory price to the first 10,000 customers but due to overwhelming demand, the offer was extended to the first 20,000 bookings.

Shailesh Chandra, managing director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passengers Electric Mobility, made it clear that the primary reason driving the price hike is the increase in battery prices by 30-35%. Tata Motors absorbs a significant portion of the increased costs in order to limit the hike in the price of its vehicles.

Even after the price hike next month, the Tiago EV will remain India’s most affordable EV. Tata is able to produce the electric hatchback at an affordable rate largely due to the fact that it shares most of its components with its ICE counterpart and its electric components with other EVs in Tata’s portfolio.

Talking about the drivetrain, the Tata Tiago EV features a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor which delivers a peak power output of 55kW and an instant full torque delivery of 114Nm. The electric hatchback can accelerate from 0-60kmph in 5.7 seconds. There are also two driving modes on offer – City mode and Sport mode – with further four levels of regen settings in each mode.
