Entry-level Mahindra Thar 2WD spied on, images inside

Days after the news of the entry-level Mahindra Thar variant first surfaced online, the lifestyle SUV was spied on just weeks ahead of launch. This time around, the entry-level Thar has been spotted in its production-spec avatar, devoid of all camouflage. The entry-level variant is expected to be priced under Rs 10 lakh.

The biggest change in the new entry-level Mahindra Thar is the lack of 4WD. Instead, it comes with a 2WD and gets some extra storage space in place of the low-range gear lever. It goes without saying that this variant will miss out on the 4×4 badging as well. The Thar 2WD gets the auto start/stop function and a lock/unlock button.

While Mahindra Thar is offered in two powertrain options, the entry-level variant will add a third engine option to the lineup in the form of a 1.5-diesel engine that produces a maximum power output of 118.5hp and 300Nm peak torque. This engine is also found on Mahindra Marazzo. The 2WD guise will also be made available in the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine variants of the Thar. All 2WD variants will come with six-speed manual transmission only.

The 5-door Mahindra Thar was also spied on recently, with more details about its interior coming to light. It sports the same dashboard layout and design as its 3-door counterpart. There are some upgrades in front-row seating in the form of an armrest, a sunglasses holder, and a grab handle on the driver’s A-pillar. There may also be some additional storage space below the armrest.

Conclusion

The entry-level Mahindra Thar will receive tax advantages due to its smaller engine and sub-4m length. This will help keep the cost of the SUV low and Mahindra could even price it under Rs 10 lakh. Currently, Mahindra Thar rivals other lifestyle SUVs like Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha.
