BYD Seal scores 5 stars in Euro NCAP tests, India launch soon

BYD Seal is expected to launch in India in the coming months. The electric sedan was showcased at Auto Expo back in January. Currently, the Chinese automaker’s portfolio in India consists of the Atto 3 electric SUV and the e6 electric MPV. The India-bound Seal has received a 5-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The sedan is likely to be tested in the upcoming Bharat NCAP tests as well.

BYD Seal EV: Euro NCAP results

In the Adult Occupant Protection test, BYD Seal scored a total of 35.8 points out of a possible 40, getting an 89% rating. The sedan offered good protection to the knees and femurs of the driver and the front passenger. Critical body areas were protected well for the passenger and adequately for the driver. In the Child Occupant Protection test, the Seal scored 43 points out of a possible 49, getting an 87% safety rating. In the frontal offset and side barrier test, the EV provided good protection to all critical body areas.

Moving on, in the Vulnerable Road Users Protection test, BYD Seal scored 51.7 points out of 63, getting a rating of 82%. The Autonomous Emergency Braking system on the Seal responded to pedestrians as well as other vehicles. While the system performed well overall, in some scenarios its performance was marginal. Finally, in the Safety Assist test, the sedan scored 13.8 points out of a possible 18. The seatbelt reminder system worked as per the standard but the driver status monitor system failed to detect anything other than the driver’s drowsiness. The lane support system and speed assistance system also work as per the standard.

The BYD Seal EV has battery pack options – 61.4kWh and 82.5kWh. The former offers a driving range of 550km and can be charged at a rate of 110kW. The larger battery pack offers a driving range of up to 700km and can be charged at a rate of 150kW. BYD Seal is also offered with a single motor and dual motor configuration. The former produces a maximum power output of 204hp while the latter churns out 312hp.

Conclusion

The BYD Seal EV will be launched in India in the coming months. It is rumoured that only the higher variant of the electric sedan will be made available in India. The Seal could receive a price tag of around Rs 60 lakh. Upon launch, the Seal EV will rival the likes of BMW i4 and Kia EV6.
