BYD e6: An all new electric MPV launched in India

Entering the electric MPV market is the new BYD e6, which has been launched in India with a price tag of Rs 29.15 ex-showroom. If you take the 7kW charger along with the car it will cost you Rs 45,000 more than the ex-showroom price. At present, the company is only retailing the car from showrooms in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Chennai.

During the launch, Shrirang Joshi, Sales Head- Electric Passenger Vehicle, BYD India Private Limited said, “We are extremely happy to finally bring our globally tested All-New e6 to the Indian market. Focusing on safety, reliability, interior space as well as economic viability, we feel that the All-New e6 will be a hit in the Indian B2B market. We have also focused on improving the driving experience with some of the best-in-class features both in terms of driving comfort and interior features. The total cost of ownership will tremendously benefit our customers and the segment, overall. Thrilled to be a part of India’s EV revolution, we will roll out more product ranges in the future.”

Design and features

The all-new e6 is an all-electric MPV that has LED daytime running DRLs that looks good on the wide front. There is no air intake as it is not needed by the company so the front grille is replaced by a beautiful honeycomb design. The lights used are LED projects in the front and LED strips for the rear. Talking about the features, the car has a 10.1-inch rotatable touch screen that allows Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity with the support of Android Auto and Apple Carplay wirelessly.

The seats of the car are spacious and covered with leather with 6-way adjusting capabilities. Looking at the current pollution levels BYD added a CN95 air-filter system with a medical-grade purification. The boor space is 580 litres as it is a MVP. The company made no compromise with drive comfort by adding a MacPherson strut front suspension and a rear multi-link suspension on the chassis. Braking duties are done by Bosch IPB intelligent brake control system for linear and faster response.

Powertrain and charging time

As BYD e6 is an all-electric car the battery should be able to pull and provide comfort to the heavy MPV. The company took care of it by adding a 71.7kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery for which the claimed range is 415km according to the ARAI and 520km according to the WLTC cycle. The motor can produce 180 Nm of peak torque and can make the e6 run at a top speed of 130 kmph.

The BYD e6 supports both AC and DC charging. The DC uses a fast charging technology that can charge the MPV from 30 percent to 80 percent in just 35 minutes. The AC charging time was not revealed by the company though we can easily anticipate with the size of the battery that it will take around 12-14 hours of charging time from a regular household charging plug.
