Both cars are powered by a 1.2-litre engine that produces a maximum power output of 73hp and 95Nm of torque. Petrol variants of the two cars churn out 86hp and 113Nm. Initially, the cars were only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox in a CNG configuration. Now, the automaker has added a 5-speed automatic gearbox to the mix. The CNG engine offers a fuel efficiency of 28.06 km/kg.

Apart from being the first automaker in India to debut the AMT gearbox in its CNG cars, Tata Motors has also taken a novel approach to the fuel cylinder situation. Instead of eating up the boot space with one large cylinder, Tata Tiago and Tigor CNGs feature a split-cylinder design for the fuel tanks. The two cylinders have an individual capacity of 30 litres. The Punch and Altroz CNGs also employ this design, freeing up to 210 litres of boot space as a result.

The Tata Tiago and Tigor CNGs are also equipped with a range of CNG-specific features. The Single Advanced ECU ensures effortless and jerk-free shifting between petrol and CNG modes. The two cars can also be started directly in CNG mode. This saves the hassle of switching to CNG while driving.

The two cars are equipped with a microswitch that kills the ignition as soon as the fuel lid is opened. The engine can only be restarted when the lid is sealed shut. The iCNG tech on the two cars kills the CNG supply to the engine and releases the gas into the atmosphere in the case of an unforeseen thermal incident.

Commenting on the launch, Mr Amit Kamat, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. said, “CNG, known for its widespread availability and accessibility, has garnered considerable acceptance over the years. Tata Motors has revolutionized the CNG segment with various industry firsts like the twin-cylinder technology (helping provide no compromise boot space), high end feature choices and direct start in CNG. In the past 24 months we have sold more than 1.3 lakh CNG vehicles. In our effort to further drive volumes and provide our customers with the best, we are now proudly launching the Tiago and the Tigor iCNG in AMT—Introducing India to its 1st AMT CNG Cars.”

Conclusion

Tata Motors has one of the most successful CNG portfolios in the country. In FY2024 Tata Motors registered a 67.9% growth in CNG sales compared to FY23. Tata Tiago and Tigor are also available with an all-electric powertrain. In other news, the automaker plans on launching the Curvv crossover and an all-electric Altroz soon.
