The much-awaited Tata Altroz Racer was launched in India last week. The sporty hatchback was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 and later at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024. Interestingly, the hatchback does not have any automatic variants even though it sits higher than the top-spec variants of the regular Altroz. A week after launch, it has been revealed that an automatic transmission may be on the cars for the Altroz Racer.

Tata Altroz Racer: Automatic variants soon?

The Tata Altroz Racer is available in three variants – R1, R2, and R3. Powering these three variants is the 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine. This engine was also found on the Altroz iTurbo, where it produced 110hp and 140Nm. However, the Altroz Racer produces a maximum power output of 120hp and 170Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Tata Altroz Racer will likely receive a 7-speed DCA gearbox as its automatic transmission option. This gearbox is also found on the Nexon SUV which is powered by the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. This will bring it on par with its closest rival, the Hyundai i20 N Line.

Cosmetically, what sets the Tata Altroz Racer apart from the regular hatchback is its dual-tone paint scheme. The roof, bonnet, C pillars, and OVRMs of the Racer are finished in black. The front fenders of the car sport the special ‘Racer’ badging. In line with the ‘Racer’ aesthetic, the hatchback has two racing stripes painted on the bonnet and the roof.

Inside, the Tata Altroz Racer is decked with premium features. These include a free-floating 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, a voice-activated electric sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and wireless charging. In terms of safety features, the Altroz Racer gets six airbags and ESC.

Conclusion

Tata Altroz Racer is available in three colour options – Atomic Orange, Avenue White, and Pure Grey. Prices for the sporty hatchback start at Rs 9.49 lakh and go up to Rs 10.99 lakh. Expect the automatic variants to cost a small premium. The Altroz Racer rivals the likes of Hyundai i20 N Line, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, and Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
