Hyundai Bayon went on sale in India yesterday at a starting price of Rs 10 lakh. Currently, the midsize SUV is only available with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Hyundai has confirmed that it will add a CNG powertrain to the lineup in January 2027. The CNG kit will be a factory fitment, instead of a dealer-level addition.

Hyundai Bayon is powered by the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that does duty on the Creta. This engine will be tweaked to run on CNG for the SUV. Since the Hyundai Creta is not offered in a CNG powertrain, the Bayon will become Hyundai’s biggest car in India with a CNG option. Its petrol model generates a maximum power output of 115hp and 144Nm of torque. The CNG model will produce a slightly diminished output, but will offer improved mileage.
It is unlikely that the Hyundai Bayon CNG will be offered with an iVT like its petrol counterpart. The 1.5L engine will be linked to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Hyundai will equip the SUV with an underbody tank for the fuel, thereby preserving its boot space capacity. It remains to be seen which trims will be made available with this powertrain. Currently, the Bayon comes in 7 trim levels – HX2, HX3, HX3+, HX5, HX6, HX8, and HX10.
The feature list of the Bayon CNG is dependent on its trim level. If it’s offered with the higher variants, it will rock the dual 12.3-inch displays for the touchscreen infotainment system and the digital instrument cluster. You can expect the infotainment system to support wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other premium features like a Bose sound system, voice commands with multi-language support, ventilated front seats, an 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, 2-step reclining rear seats, automatic temperature control, rear AC vents, a panoramic sunroof, a rear centre armrest with integrated cup holders, and wireless charging will also make the cut.
The SUV will get standard safety features like 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), rollover sensor, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and more. The Level 2 ADAS model is only offered with the top-spec variants, so it remains to be seen whether it will make it to the CNG model. This suite comprises comprises 23 driver assistance functions, including Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), High Beam Assist (HBA), and more.

Prices for the petrol version of the Bayon start at Rs 10 lakh and go up to Rs 18 lakh. The CNG variants will demand a small premium over their respective petrol counterparts. The SUV will rival the Maruti Suzuki Victoris CNG, Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor CNG, and Tata Nexon CNG.
