MG Comet EV launched in India at Rs 7.98 lakh

After breaking cover in India last week, MG Comet EV has finally been launched at an introductory starting price of Rs 7.98 lakh. Bookings for MG Comet EV will begin on May 15, with deliveries rolling out in the following weeks. MG Comet EV undercuts Tata Tiago EV, India’s most affordable EV, by Rs 71,000. While the Tiago EV is a proper hatchback, the Comet is a mini EV that is more suited for intra-city commutes.

MG Comet EV: All the details

MG Comet EV is the most compact car in India right now, standing at dimensions of 2,974mm x 1,505mm x 1,631mm with a wheelbase of 2,010mm. This makes Comet even smaller than Tata Nano. The overall design is quite boxy, which suits the EVs compactness. If you haven’t noticed already, MG Comet is a rebadged version of the Wuling Air EV which is sold in Indonesia.

Up front, MG Comet EV gets a stub nose and dual LED headlamps with a light bar running across the width of the car. MG calls this ‘Extended Horizon’ connecting lights. The charging port is housed under the light bar. The Comet EV gets 12-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the tail lamps mimic the design of the LED headlamps. The ‘Extended Horizon’ light bar connects the tail lamps as well.

Inside, the MG Comet is decked with all the premium features. This is the biggest selling point of the vehicle and the reason why it is priced so high. The Comet EV gets dual 10.25-inch screens for the infotainment system and the instrument cluster. The two-spoke steering wheel comes with integrated controls. The centre control is detached from the dashboard and houses a rotary knob for gear selection, power window switches, and an electronic parking brake. MG Comet EV can seat 4 people.

The MG Comet EV gets a 17.3kWh battery pack that offers a driving range of 230km. This battery pack has been sourced from Tata AutoComp and is rated IP67 for dust and water resistance. Using the 3.3kW charger that comes with the car, the EV can be fully charged in seven hours. Powering the Comet EV is a single electric motor that can produce a maximum power output of 42hp and 110Nm of torque.
