Volvo has discontinued the petrol variant of the XC40 SUV in India. The automaker’s Indian website mentions that the petrol mild-hybrid version of the compact SUV has been discontinued from the country. The electric variant of the XC40 is now the most affordable Volvo offering in the country.

The Volvo XC40 was priced at Rs 46.40 lakh before being taken off the market. It was the most affordable Volvo car in India. The XC40 Recharge is priced at Rs 56.90 lakh, making it the new affordable Volvo offering in the country. The C40 Recharge, Volvo’s only other EV in India, costs Rs 62.95 lakh. Talking about the automaker’s other ICE offerings, the XC60 and XC90 SUVs are priced at Rs 67.85 lakh and Rs 98.85 lakh respectively. The S90 sedan fetches Rs 68.25 lakh.
The Volvo XC40 was launched in India with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that put out 185hp and 300Nm. This was replaced by the mild hybrid petrol engine last year. The XC40 facelift introduced in 2022 featured a 2.0-litre mild-hybrid turbocharged petrol engine that generated a maximum power output of 197hp and 300Nm of torque. The compact SUV offered a two-wheel drive configuration.
The two electric motors on the Volvo XC40 Recharge can generate a maximum power output of 408hp and 660Nm torque. The 78kWh battery pack can power the SUV for 418km on a single charge. The 150kW DC fast charging option can take the battery charge from 10 to 80% in 33 minutes. The regular 50kW charger takes 2.5 hours to fully charge the electric SUV. According to Volvo, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 4.9 seconds.

While Volvo has not provided a reason for pulling the XC40 from India, it is understood that the decision is in line with the automaker’s global policy to phase out all of its ICE vehicles and go fully electric by the end of the decade. Out of all Volvo cars sold in sold in India, 27% were the XC40 Recharge. The electric SUV rivals the likes of the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq.
