Volvo XC40 & C40: New branding and updated powertrain

Launched in July 2022 as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the EX40 is powered by a dual-electric motor which can now produce a maximum power output of 436hp, an improvement of 26hp. The peak torque offered by the electric SUV remains 660Nm. Powered by the same powertrain, the EC40 produces similar numbers. Volvo claims that the acceleration of the two EVs has also improved with the introduction of the new Performance software package. Existing customers can upgrade to this package using the Volvo app.

Volvo EC40

The two EVs also share the same 78kWh. However, they offer different driving ranges. At the time of launch, the Volvo XC40 Recharge offered a range of 418km on a single charge, while the C40 could go up to 530km. The new Performance software package improves the driving range of the EX40 and EC40 to 577km and 583km respectively.

Inside, the Volvo XC40 Recharge (now known as EX40) features a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. It also comes with a Harman Kardon sound system, powered front seats, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, multiple airbags, and other ADAS features. The EC40 shares its instrumentation with the EX40.

Volvo EC40

The more notable differences between the two EVs lie along their exterior. The EX40 (previously Volvo XC40 Recharge) is a standard SUV which follows the design language of its ICE counterpart. Meanwhile, the EC40 (previously C40 Recharge) has a sloping roofline which gives it a coupe-like look. Both EVs feature the signature Thor’s Hammer LED DRLs and have sealed grilles.
