Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge EVs rebranded as EX40 and EC40

Volvo has rebranded two of its EVs in India to bring them up to the new nomenclature. The Volvo XC40 Recharge has been renamed to the EX40 while the C40 Recharge now goes by EC40. The two EVs join the EX30 and EX90 in Volvo’s global EV portfolio. The automaker has also updated the two EVs with a new Performance package. This has increased the power output of the EVs.

Volvo XC40 & C40: New branding and updated powertrain

Launched in July 2022 as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the EX40 is powered by a dual-electric motor which can now produce a maximum power output of 436hp, an improvement of 26hp. The peak torque offered by the electric SUV remains 660Nm. Powered by the same powertrain, the EC40 produces similar numbers. Volvo claims that the acceleration of the two EVs has also improved with the introduction of the new Performance software package. Existing customers can upgrade to this package using the Volvo app.

The two EVs also share the same 78kWh. However, they offer different driving ranges. At the time of launch, the Volvo XC40 Recharge offered a range of 418km on a single charge, while the C40 could go up to 530km. The new Performance software package improves the driving range of the EX40 and EC40 to 577km and 583km respectively.

Inside, the Volvo XC40 Recharge (now known as EX40) features a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. It also comes with a Harman Kardon sound system, powered front seats, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, multiple airbags, and other ADAS features. The EC40 shares its instrumentation with the EX40.

The more notable differences between the two EVs lie along their exterior. The EX40 (previously Volvo XC40 Recharge) is a standard SUV which follows the design language of its ICE counterpart. Meanwhile, the EC40 (previously C40 Recharge) has a sloping roofline which gives it a coupe-like look. Both EVs feature the signature Thor’s Hammer LED DRLs and have sealed grilles.

Conclusion

Prices for the EX40 (Volvo XC40 Recharge) start at Rs 57.90 lakh in India. The EC40 (C40 Recharge) is priced at Rs 62.95 lakh. Volvo is yet to reflect the name change on its India website. Both EVs rival the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 in India.
