Tata announces Tiago EV as its next electric car

Tata Motors has announced Tiago EV as its next electric car, which could also be the most affordable EV in the Indian market. The announcement came on the occasion of World Electric Vehicle day which is observed on the 9th of September. The concept of the Tiago EV has been in the works for a long time, first being revealed in the UK and then later at AutoExpo 2018. Four years after the reveal of the concept, the EV will finally get the green light to go into production mode. The Tiago EV will sit below Tigor EV in Tata’s catalogue of electric vehicles.

The Tiago EV is expected to retain the looks of its ICE-powered sibling, bar a few minor changes. Given that it’s an all-electric vehicle, the Tiago EV will have a shut-off front grille. It will also come with blue highlights and details across the exterior, much like the Tigor EV.

While it is too soon to speculate on the powertrain options, the Tiago EV will very likely be based on Tigor EV’s platform. The Tigor EV already comes in three different engine variants. The Tiago EV could get the base variant’s electric motor which produces a maximum power of 41hp and 105Nm peak torque. There are two battery pack options for this motor – a 16kWh and a 21.5kWh battery pack. The former offers a driving range of 165 km while the latter can cover a distance of 213 km on a single full charge.

The Tigor EV is also offered with a more powerful electric motor which produces a maximum power of 75hp and 170Nm peak torque. This engine is powered by a 26kWh lithium-ion battery pack which provides a driving range of 306km.

Inside, the Tiago EV is expected to retain the dual-tone black and grey interior theme of its ICE sibling. The blue highlights from the exterior will also feature inside the cabin. The transmission knob could be carried forward from the Tigor EV.

Announcing its plans on World EV Day, Mr. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. said, “Today, is a momentous occasion for us, as we announce the expansion of our EV portfolio further with a new mainstream intervention from the stable of Tata Motors, the Tiago EV. As a leader, we are now pioneering the next phase of the EV market expansion, which will bring all the EV benefits of an exciting yet easy drive, silent cabin, low cost of ownership to a more accessible level.”
