MG Comet EV unveiled in India

MG India has unveiled MG Comet EV, its first micro electric offering in India. MG Comet EV is a rebadged version of the Wuling Air EV that was launched in Indonesia last year. The EV’s title is in line with the automaker’s theme of naming its cars after WW2-era British airplanes. The Comet EV will launch in India later this year.

MG Comet EV: Everything you need to know

The MG Comet EV measures just 2.9 m long, making it shorter than Tata Nano. The 2,010mm wheelbase of the Comet allows for optimum cabin space inside. In terms of design, the Comet EV looks exactly the same as its Indonesian sibling, Wuling Air. The only difference is the branding on the two vehicles.

Up front, the MG Comet EV get a stub nose, dual LEDs, and a light strip running under the windscreen and window mirrors. The rear profile of the micro EV will match the front fascia. The EV will get a dual-tone paint scheme. If MG leaves the Wuling Air EV’s interior unchanged, we could see two 10.2-inch screens for infotainment and instrument cluster. Sitting right below the twin screens are two horizontal AC vents with three round HVAC controls.

The two-spoke steering wheel is equipped with audio and navigation controls on either side. The dashboard gets a dual-tone theme, which seems to be carried onto the rest of the interiors. The detached central console comes with a rotary knob for gear selection, power window switches, and an electronic parking brake. The MG Comet EV will seat 4 passengers, but there seems to be plenty of legroom for rear passengers since there is no cargo space.

The Wuling Air EV is currently being offered in two variants in Indonesia. Its MG counterpart in India is expected to follow suit. The Wuling Air EV offers a range of 200km on the base model and 300km on the higher-end model. Its MG counterpart will source the battery pack from Tata AutoComp and will use LFP cells. Rumours suggest that the MG Comet EV will be offered in two engine variants – 30 kW and 50 kW.

Conclusion

Although it is a micro EV, MG will be pricing the Comet between Rs 10-13 lakh. MG may be able to reduce some costs with the assembly of the EV taking place in India. Upon launch, the Comet EV will face competition from Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3.
