Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door: An instant success

Maruti Suzuki seems to have an instant hit on its hands with the 5-door Jimny. Within the first month of its debut, the SUV garnered over 15,000 bookings. The automaker aims to produce one lakh units of the Jimny every year, 66% of which will be reserved for the Indian market while other units will be exported. Maruti’s plants could be rolling out 7,000 Jimnys every month. The lifestyle SUV will get an official launch in the coming months, and Maruti will roll out deliveries for the top-spec Alpha trim first.

In terms of design, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door isn’t all that different from its 3-door counterpart. The major difference is the vehicle size, with the 5-door Jimny being the visibly bigger vehicle out of the two, standing at dimensions of  3850mm x 1645mm x 1730mm with a wheelbase of 2,550 mm. The 3-door Jimny had a wheelbase of 2,250 mm. The SUV gets an additional quarter window for the rear seating row.

Things remain the same under the hood, as the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door continues to be powered by the K15B petrol engine. This petrol unit puts out a maximum power output of 102hp and 130Nm peak torque.  The 5-door Jimny has been made available with 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission options. It also receives Suzuki’s All Grip Pro AWD with low-range transfer gear (4L mode). The lifestyle SUV also gets a mild-hybrid configuration.

In terms of features, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door gets a 9.0-inch touchscreen Smart Play Pro+ infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an Arkamys surround sound system, 6 airbags, Brake Limited Slip Differential, ESP with hill hold assist, rearview camera, hill descent control, and ABS with EBD.

Conclusion

While Maruti has not revealed the pricing for the 5-door Jimny, we expect it to cost around Rs 13 lakh. Reports suggest that the SUV will be launched in May. Maruti is also working on an all-electric Jimny, but details about its launch have been kept under the lid. Upon launch, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door will rival the upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
