Maruti Suzuki achieves 25 million sales in India

Maruti Suzuki has recorded 25 million units in sales in India, achieving a new milestone. Maruti Suzuki is the only automaker in India to hit this milestone. The company started operations 40 years ago, in 1983, as a joint collaboration between Japan’s Suzuki Motor Company and India’s Maruti Udyog. The automaker enjoys the largest market share in passenger vehicles in India and hit the record for 25 million units produced a couple of months back.

Maruti Suzuki’s record is 40 years in the making

The car that announced Maruti Suzuki’s arrival in India was the Maruti 800, which remains iconic to this day. Over the decades, Maruti’s portfolio has grown considerably, and the automaker currently offers 17 cars in India. Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing plants in Gurugram and Manesar have a production capacity of 1.5 million units per annum.

The company recorded its first 5 million sales in 2006, taking 23 years to achieve the milestone. Since then, Maruti Suzuki has breezed past the records, reaching the 10 million sales landmark in 2012, and 20 million units in 2019. In the last four years, Maruti has sold 5 million units in India. 

In the third quarter of FY 2022-23 the automaker sold an impressive 465,911 units. This includes 61,982 units in exports, while 403,929 cars were sold domestically. Recently, Maruti shipped the first batch of its latest flagship SUV, Grand Vitara, to Latin America. Pending customer orders stood at about 363,000 vehicles at the end of Q3 FY 2022-23 out of which about 119,000 orders were for newly launched models.

During the quarter, the company registered net sales of INR 278,492 million. During the same period the previous year, the net sales were at INR 221,876 million. The company recorded an operating profit in Q3 FY2022-23 of INR 21,230 million as against INR 9,190 million in quarter 3 FY2021-22. The net profit for the quarter rose to INR 23,513 million from INR 10,113 million in Q3 FY2021-22.

Conclusion

Maruti Suzuki also plans on foraying into the EV sphere in the coming years. The automaker unveiled the eVX concept electric SUV at Auto Expo, earlier this month. This concept EV will hit production in the coming years, with Maruti planning a 2025 launch. Talking about upcoming releases, the automaker will be launching the 5-door Jimny and Fronx SUV in the coming months.
