Volkswagen Taigun facelift breaks cover ahead of launch

The Volkswagen Taigun facelift is set to go on sale in India on April 9. Ahead of the launch event, the automaker has taken the wraps off the midsize SUV. It has also confirmed that the SUV has gone into production at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. This is the first big facelift that the Taigun has received since 2021. Its Skoda counterpart, Kushaq, was launched at a starting price of Rs 10.69 lakh last month.

Volkswagen Taigun facelift: What’s new?

The new Volkswagen Taigun takes design inspiration from the Tayron SUV. Its revised front bumper features a large air dam with horizontal slats. These slats are finished with chrome. The GT trim gets a gloss-black finish for these slats. The LED headlamps are integrated with LED DRLs that are connected by a sleek light bar running across the grille. The sleek grille also houses an illuminated VW logo in the middle.

Things remain the same along the sides, as the Taigun facelift retains the profile and stance of its outgoing version. The standard variants have dual-tone alloy wheels, silver roof rails, and chrome garnish on the OVRMs. Meanwhile, these elements have been blacked out on the GT trim. On top of that, it gets red brake callipers and exclusive GT badging on the grille and fenders. Volkswagen has not revealed the rear section of the Taigun facelift yet.

Details about the interior layout and instrumentation have been kept under wraps as well. We expect a major overlap in design and features with the newly-launched Skoda Kushaq. The Taigun could pack a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, with support for wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features like dual-colour ambient lighting, rear-seat massage function, a panoramic sunroof, automatic AC, auto-dimming IRVMs, a 6-speaker audio system, wireless charging, rain-sensing wipers, a rear wiper, and rear defoggers are expected to make the cut.

The Volkswagen Taigun facelift will retain the 2 engine options offered with the current model. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 115hp and 178Nm of torque. It can be mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Volkswagen will offer the facelift model with an 8-speed torque converter gearbox option for this engine. This gearbox was introduced on the new Skoda Kushaq. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 150hp and 250Nm of torque. It can be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG transmission.

Mr Nitin Kohli, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, said, “Since its launch, the Taigun has been instrumental in strengthening the brand’s SUV strategy. It has played a pivotal role in bolstering our product portfolio for discerning Indian buyers and their aspirations. The new Taigun is central to our strategic plan for the model line-up that will drive meaningful growth. The start of production for the new Taigun at our Chakan facility is a moment of great pride for us. It continues to signify our commitment to the Indian consumers who choose to own premium German-engineered products. We are certain the new Taigun will build on the success of its predecessor and elevate customer experience.”
