Tata Curvv amasses over 8,000 sales within 2 months of launch

The all-electric version of the Tata Curvv crossover was launched in India on August 7 this year. This was followed by the launch of the ICE models in September. According to the passenger vehicle industry data from SIAM, Tata Curvv has sold 8,218 units since its launch in August. This number includes the petrol, diesel, and electric models of the crossover. The powertrain-wise breakdown was not made available by SIAM.

Tata Curvv: Creating a new niche

After launching the Curvv EV in August, Tata Motors made 3,455 deliveries within a month. By the end of September, the automaker had rolled out 4,763 units of the EV and ICE models. The Curvv accounted for 8% of Tata’s passenger vehicle sales in August and 11% in September.

While Tata Curvv’s performance in India is respectable, it still has a long way to go in matching the performance of bestsellers like Nexon and Creta. While the crossover outsold the Harrier within the 2-month time frame, its sales paled in comparison to those of Nexon and Creta. The Nexon has average monthly sales of 12,000 units, while the Creta is the segment leader with 16,000 average monthly sales. Since the Curvv is carving out a sub-genre for itself, its comparison with the Nexon and Creta should come with the added contextual information that the latter two operate in the highly flourishing midsize SUV segment.

The Tata Curvv EV is available in two battery pack options. The 45kWh variant offers a driving range of 502km and is available with the Creative, Accomplished, and Accomplished+ S trims. Meanwhile, the 55kWh variant has a driving range of 585km and is available with all trims except Creative. Both battery pack variants are powered by a single electric motor mounted on the front axle. However, the 45kWh variants produce a maximum power output of 150hp and the 55kWh variants put out 167hp. The torque output on all variants is 215Nm. The battery packs can be charged from 10-80% in under 40 minutes using a 70kW charger.

Tata Curvv ICE is available in 3 powertrain options. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder ‘Revotron’ petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 120hp and 170Nm torque. The new 1.2-litre ‘Hyperion’ engine generates a maximum power output of 125hp and 225Nm torque. Meanwhile, the 1.5-litre ‘Kryojet’ diesel engine produces a maximum power output of 118hp. All three engines can be paired with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Conclusion

Prices for the ICE range of Tata Curvv start at Rs 9.99 lakh and go up to Rs 19 lakh. Meanwhile, the Tata Curvv EV is priced between Rs 17.49 lakh – Rs 21.99 lakh. The crossover currently demands a waiting period of up to 2 months. Its EV version rivals MG ZS EV, Mahindra XUV400, and Tata Nexon EV, while the ICE models go up against Citroen Basalt.
