Prices for Mahindra Thar hiked by Rs 1 lakh

Prices for Mahindra Thar have been hiked yet again, this time by up to Rs 1 lakh. Last month, the price for the MT LX 2WD variant of the Thar was raised by Rs 50,000. While Mahindra has not given a reason for the price hike this time, it is believed to be because of the engine update to comply with BS6 Phase II norms.

Mahindra Thar: Price hike explained

Prices for the Mahindra Thar now start at Rs 10.55 lakh for the entry-level diesel AX(O) 2WD variant. This variant had not received a hike in March. The top-spec diesel LX AT variant now fetches Rs 16.77 lakh.

The Manual hard top LX trim receives the biggest price hike of Rs 1.05 lakh. The entry-level variant is now dearer by Rs 55,000. All other variants get a uniform price hike of Rs 28,200. The only variant to not receive a hike is the LX AT RWD variant.

Currently, Mahindra Thar comes in three powertrain options. The 1.5-litre diesel engine found in the base variants offers a maximum power output of 118hp and 300Nm torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The entry-level variants are only available in 2WD. The 2.0-litre petrol engine puts out 152hp and 300Nm while the 2.2-litre diesel engine produces 130hp and 300Nm. These engines are offered with a 6-speed manual as well as automatic transmission. The diesel variant is exclusively available in a 4WD configuration, while the petrol engine gets a 2WD option as well.

Mahindra recently hit the production milestone of 1,00,000 units for the Thar. It remains the most successful lifestyle SUV in India. Mahindra is also planning to release a 5-door variant of the Thar this year. This 5-door variant will also be made available in multiple powertrain options.
