Nissan Magnite: Crash test results explained

After the pre-facelift model secured a 2-star rating, the Nissan Magnite facelift underwent two rounds of crash testing at the Global NCAP. In the first round, the SUV secured a 4-star safety rating, scoring 26.51 points (out of 34) in the Adult Occupant Protection test and 36 points (out of 49) in the Child Occupant Protection Test. Unsatisfied with the results, Nissan made some changes to the facelifted model and sent it back for another round of testing. In this round, the SUV secured all 5 stars. The detailed second round results are mentioned below.

In the Adult Occupant Protection test, the Nissan Magnite facelift scored 32.31 points out of a possible 34. In a frontal collision, the SUV showed good protection to the driver’s head, neck, chest, thighs, and feet. The legs were adequately protected. The passenger dummy’s head, neck, and thighs were protected well, while the chest and legs showed adequate protection. In a side collision, the driver’s head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis showed good protection. In the side pole impact test, the driver’s head, abdomen, and pelvis were well protected, while the chest showed adequate protection.

In the Child Occupant Protection test, the Nissan Magnite facelift scored 33.64 points out of a possible 49. Its child restraint system was tested with dummies for 18-month and 3-year-old children. The SUV got a Dynamic score of 15.64 (out of 24), a CRS Installation score of 12 (out of 12), and a Vehicle Assessment score of 6 (out of 13). Interestingly, the Magnite facelift did better in the Child Occupant Protection test in the first round of testing.

Richard Woods, Chief Executive Officer, Global NCAP, said, “It’s very welcome to see Nissan’s focus on improving the Magnite’s safety performance. The five star rating is relevant to consumers in South Africa and India and it demonstrates what can be achieved in a relatively short period of time when a manufacturer is fully committed to engage in the NCAP process.”

The Nissan Magnite facelift is available in two engine options. The 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 72hp and 96Nm of torque. This engine can be linked to a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 100hp and 160Nm of torque. This engine can be mated to a 5-speed manual or CVT gearbox.
