Citroen Basalt starts shipping from India

Citroen has shipped the first batch of the Basalt crossover from India to South Africa. The shipment comprised 500 units of the Citroen Basalt. It was flagged off from the automaker’s production facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The Basalt was launched in South Africa in March at a starting price of R 354,900.

Citroen Basalt: A closer look at the South African variant

The South Africa-spec Citroen Basalt is offered in 2 trim levels – Plus and Max. In India, it comes in an entry-level You trim too. Apart from the lack of X badging, no cosmetic changes have been made to the model exported from India.

The India-spec Citroen Basalt comes in 2 engine options – 1.2-litre NA petrol and 1.2-litre turbo petrol. In South Africa, it is only offered with the latter option. This 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 110hp and 205Nm of torque. It can be mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The option of a 6-speed manual transmission is not available in South Africa, even though it is offered with the Indian model. It has a reduced torque output of 190Nm.

The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, available with the entry-level variants in India, produces a maximum power output of 82hp and 115Nm. This engine can only be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

In terms of features, the South African version of the Citroen Basalt gets a 10-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include cruise control with speed limiter, keyless entry with proximity sensing and push-button start, electric windows, electrically adjustable and folding exterior mirrors, ample interior storage, automatic air-conditioning with rear vents, and more.

On the safety front, the crossover gets six airbags as standard, along with features like Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Hill Hold Control, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), rear parking sensors, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), two ISOFIX child-seat anchor points, and more.

Final Thought

The Basalt becomes the third model sourced from India under Citroën’s C-Cubed programme, joining the C3 and Aircross. Its prices in South Africa start at R 354,900 (~ Rs 20.15 lakh) for the Plus trim and go up to R 369,900 (~ Rs 21 lakh) for the Max trim. In India, it is priced between Rs 8.55 lakh and Rs 13.96 lakh.
