Volvo has decided to pull the S90 sedan from the Indian market after a brief 4-year run. The Volvo S90 was launched in India back in October 2021 as the automaker’s only sedan in the market. After a lukewarm performance in the market, Volvo has decided to cut its losses and ditch the S90 from its portfolio. The facelifted version of the sedan broke cover globally in April 2025, but it remains to be seen whether Volvo will bring it to Indian shores.

Volvo S90: A look at the past and the future

Volvo’s only sedan in India carried a sleek and refined look. Its front fascia flaunted the automaker’s iconic ‘Thor Hammer’ LED DRLs. The premium front grille had a diagonal band with the Volvo emblem studded at the centre. The rear tail lamps replicated the design language of the LED DRLs up front.

Inside, the Volvo S90 came packed with a vertically aligned touchscreen infotainment system. This display was flanked on either side by vertical AC vents. Other features of the sedan included a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system with a 1,400 output, ventilated front seats with a built-in massage function, a 360-degree camera, four-zone climate control, built-in Google services, ADAS, and more.

The Volvo S90 was available in a single 2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. This engine produced a maximum power output of 250hp and 350Nm of torque. It was mated to a 48V mild-hybrid system. Unlike its SUV counterpart, the XC60, the S90 was not available in an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) configuration. Compared to its peers, the lack of multiple powertrains on the S90 was one of the primary reasons behind its lacklustre sales.

The new Volvo S90 facelift uses Matrix LED technology for its Thor Hammer DRLs. These DRLs are now sleeker and stretch all the way up to the grille. The new grille features diagonal slats instead of the vertical ones found on the now-discontinued outgoing model. The bumper is more sculpted and houses air vents with a silver finish. The look of the alloy wheels has been updated as well.

It is equipped to receive Over The Air (OTA) updates. The sedan also features Pilot Assist – an assisted driving function meant for multi-lane highways and single-lane roads.

Final Thoughts

The Volvo S90 was priced at Rs 68.25 lakh at the time of its discontinuation. It was locally assembled in India to keep its price in check. If the new version of the sedan is launched in India, it will demand a significant premium. It will lock horns against the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E Class, and the upcoming Lexus ES.
