Tata Punch: The story so far

Back in May 2023, Tata Motors rolled out the 200,000th Punch from its manufacturing facility in Ranjangaon, Pune. It took the automaker 19 months to accomplish this feat. The next 1 lakh units of the SUV were rolled out in just 7 months. Tata Punch was launched back in October 2021 at a starting price of Rs 5.49 lakh. Currently, it starts at Rs 6 lakh and goes up to Rs 10.10 lakh for the top-spec variant.

Tata Punch shares its platform with the Altroz hatchback (priced between Rs 6.60 lakh – Rs 10.74 lakh). The SUV stands at dimensions of  3,840mm in length, 1,822mm in width, 1,635mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,450mm. It is available in 7 colour options: Orcus White, Atomic Orange, Daytona Grey, Meteor Bronze, Calypso Red, Tropical Mist and Tornado Blue.

Inside, the SUV gets the same dashboard layout as the Altroz. There is an option of a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system or a 4-inch floating screen depending on the variant you choose. The bigger touchscreen supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Powering the Tata Punch is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated, 3-cylinder engine with Dynapro technology that is capable of producing a maximum power output of 85hp and 113Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or 5-speed AMT. The SUV can go from 0-60 kph in a claimed 6.5 seconds and 0-100 kph in a claimed 16.5 seconds. In a CNG configuration, the 1.2-litre engine produces a maximum power output of 77hp and 97Nm of torque. However, the Punch CNG is only available with a manual transmission.

The all-electric version of Tata Punch will retain the exterior and interior design from its ICE counterpart but will get some EV-exclusive changes like blue highlights and special badging. The charging port for the EV will be located at the front. Inside, the EV could feature a larger touchscreen infotainment system and a two-spoke steering wheel with the illuminated Tata logo. Not much is known about the powertrain of the electric SUV, but it could share its battery pack with the Tigor EV.

Conclusion

Apart from the Punch EV, Tata Motors will also launch the all-electric Safari and Harrier SUVs in 2024. The two EVs were spotted in Pune recently. The automaker already has the biggest EV portfolio in India, featuring the most affordable car in India right now – the Tata Tiago EV (prices starting at Rs 8.69 lakh). The ICE variant of Tata Punch rivals the likes of Hyundai Exter, Nissan Magnite, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
