Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: Bringing mobility to the masses
Maruti has teamed up with Bangalore-based startup, TRUEAssist Technology, for the swivel-seat initiative. Buyers can get it retrofitted at a Maruti Suzuki Arena dealership. It can be installed in existing Wagon R models as well. As of now, over 200 Arena dealerships across 11 cities are equipped to install the retrofit equipment. The automaker says that the project will be scaled up based on the customer response.
Maruti Suzuki’s tallboy design gives it spacious headroom and legroom. The ease of ingress/egress that comes along with this design makes the hatchback the ideal vehicle for the installation of a swivel seat. It has undergone safety tests at the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The hatchback remains compliant with current safety standards. The installation is carried out without changing the structure of the core functioning of the car.
The current-gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is offered in 3 powertrain options in India. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is only available on the ZXi Plus variants, producing a maximum power output of 88hp and 113Nm of torque. The 1.0-litre petrol engine on the lower engine puts out 66hp and 89Nm. In a CNG guide, this engine produces 56hp and 82Nm. The non-CNG models are now E20-compliant. This means that the hatchback can run on E20 fuel – 20% ethanol and 80% petrol.
Mr Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Swivel seat will make daily travel more convenient for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. WagonR is among the top 10 selling models* in India and is ideal to offer this accessibility feature to a wider audience. This initiative reflects our vision of inclusive mobility and reinforces our commitment to customer-focused solutions that empower people with dignity, independence, and confidence in their everyday journeys. It fully aligns with our motto to deliver ‘Joy of Mobility’ to as many people as possible.”
