Maruti Suzuki Swift, S-Presso, and Ignis score 1-star at GNCAP crash tests

Maruti Suzuki Swift, S-Presso, and Ignis had a disappointing stint at the Global NCAP crash tests as each sedan scored a 1-star rating. The latest round of tests was carried out under stricter guidelines and protocols as a part of GNCAP’s ‘Safer Cars for India’ campaign. Here is how the Maruti Suzuki cars performed.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Adult Occupant Protection test score: 19.19/34

Adult Occupant Protection test rating: 1 out of 5 stars

Child Occupant Protection test score: 16.68/49

Child Occupant Protection test rating: 1 out of 5 stars

In the frontal impact, the protection offered to the driver and passenger’s head and neck was good. The passenger’s chest showed adequate protection but the driver’s chest showed weak protection. Both of driver’s knees and the passenger’s right knee showed marginal protection.

In the side impact, head, abdomen, and pelvis protection was good while chest protection was poor. 

In the frontal impact test for child occupant protection, there was no excessive forward movement and the car offered good protection to the head and marginal protection to the chest when the child seat for a 3-year-old was installed in the car. However, the tests after installing the seat for an 18-month-old found out that the car offers poor protection for the head and chest.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso

Child Occupant Protection test score: 3.52/49

Child Occupant Protection test rating: 0 out of 5 stars

In the frontal impact collision, the protection provided to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good. However, the driver’s chest showed poor protection and the passenger’s chest showed marginal protection. The driver’s knees showed marginal protection and the passenger’s knees showed good protection.

When tested with the child seat for a 3-year-old, S-Presso was not able to prevent

head forward excursion over the allowed limits during the frontal impact. However, the child seat for an 18-month-old offered good protection to the head but poor protection to the chest.

In frontal impact assessment, the protection offered to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good. The driver’s chest showed weak protection and the passenger’s chest showed adequate protection. The knee protection for both driver and passenger was marginal.

Conclusion

Since the guidelines for crash tests were recently applied by GNCAP, the previous scores received by these cars are no longer valid. Previously, Maruti Suzuki Swift had scored 2 stars at the GNCAP crash tests while the Ignis received 3 stars. Mahindra Scorpio-N was also one of the India-spec cars tested at GNCAP, and it received the highest possible 5-star rating.
