Over 11,000 units of Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara recalled, seatbelt issue detected

Maruti Suzuki is recalling over 11,000 units of its latest flagship SUV, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, due to an issue with the rear seat belt mounting brackets. Maruti has estimated that the 11,177 units of the Grand Vitara manufactured between August 8, 2022 and November 15, 2022 are affected by this issue.

This is the second time Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara has been recalled this month

This is not the first time that the Grand Vitara is being recalled by the automaker. Earlier this month, Maruti recalled over 17,000 units of the SUV along with Alto K10, S Presso, Eeco, Brezza, and Baleno due to a faulty airbag controller. This time around, Maruti is recalling the 11,177 units because it found a possible defect in the rear seat belt mounting brackets that can surface after a certain period of time.

Maruti mentioned that the rear seat belt mounting bracket was prone to loosening after extended use in the long run. This has the potential to impact its functionality. Maruti will be contacting the owners of all the affected units and will be calling in the vehicles to get the issue patched. No service charge will be charged to the customers.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara’s Hyundai sibling, the Urban Cruiser HyRyder, was also recalled back in December after the automaker spotted an issue with the seatbelt height adjuster. The automaker spotted a defect in the front seat belt shoulder height adjuster that could possibly lead to total disassembly. As a result, Toyota Kirloskar recalled 994 units of the HyRyder to ensure the seat belt adjuster is fixed. The Grand Vitara and HyRyder share the same hybrid powertrains among other features.

The Grand Vitara comes in two engine variants – a 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine with mild hybrid technology and Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA petrol engine with a strong hybrid system. A 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission are offered with the Vitara. The 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine generates a maximum power of 103hp with 137Nm peak torque. Meanwhile, the 1.5-litre TNGA petrol engine generates 92hp of power with a peak torque of 122Nm. This, coupled with the electric motor in the strong hybrid variant, generates a combined power of 115hp. The electric motor alone produces a maximum power of 80hp with 141Nm peak torque.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is also available in a CNG configuration. Along with the HyRyder, the midsize SUV rivals Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
