Maruti Suzuki Ciaz gets a 1-star safety rating from Global NCAP

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has received a 1-star safety rating from Global NCAP. This rating applies to the India-spec version of the sedan. After being put through a series of crash tests, the Ciaz was 1 star in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) test and 2 stars in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) test. The GNCAP also tested the Celerio, awarding it a 2-star rating.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz: GNCAP crash test results explained

In the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) test, the Ciaz scored 20.86 points out of a possible 34. Upon frontal collision, the car showed good protection to the driver’s head and neck. The driver’s chest and knees were protected marginally. The protection offered to the tibia was marginal to adequate. Meanwhile, the feet showed poor protection. The protection offered to the passenger’s head, neck, knees, and tibia was good, and the chest showed adequate protection. Upon side impact, the head and pelvis of the driver showed good protection, but the chest was poorly protected. The side pole impact test was not performed due to the unavailability of side head protection, even as an optional feature.

In the Child Occupant Protection (COP) test, the midsize sedan garnered 28.57 points out of a possible 49. GNCAP used test dummies for 3-year and 18-month old children. The child seats were installed rearward with the help of ISOFIX anchorages and support legs. They were able to prevent head exposure, offering full head protection. Upon side impact, both CRSs offered full protection. 

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is powered by a 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 103hp and 138Nm of torque. This engine can be paired with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The mileage on offer is 20.65kmpl for manual variants and 20.04kmpl for automatic variants. The engine comes with Smart Hybrid technology.

Final Thoughts

Prices for the Ciaz start at Rs 9.09 lakh and go up to Rs 11.88 lakh. Reports suggest that the current-gen model of the sedan will be phased out of the Indian market soon. Maruti does not have a facelift or a next-gen model planned as of yet. As things stand, the Ciaz rivals the Volkswagen Virtus, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, and Skoda Slavia in India.
