BMW 7 Series and i7 launched in India

The new BMW 7 Series has gone on sale in India. The lineup comprises petrol and all-electric offerings, including 740 M Sport, i7 50 xDrive M Sport, and i7 M70 xDrive. The lone ICE offering in the series, BMW 740 M Sport, is priced at Rs 1.95 crore. Meanwhile, the range-topping BMW i7 M70 xDrive fetches Rs 2.65 crore. The i7 xDrive M Sport and 740 M Sport will be locally assembled at BMW’s plant in Chennai. The i7 M70 xDrive arrives as a full import.

The BMW 740 M Sport is powered by the same 3.0-litre direct-injection straight-six turbo-petrol engine as its predecessor. It generates a maximum power output of 400hp and 540Nm of torque, an improvement of 19hp and 20Nm over the outgoing model. This engine is mated to an 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The sedan can go from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds. Its top speed is capped at 250km/h. The facelift model does not come with a diesel engine option.

Meanwhile, the i7 50 xDrive M Sport generates a maximum power output of 455hp and 600Nm of torque. It can go from 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds, attaining a top speed of 210km/h. The 112.5kWh battery pack offers a driving range of 728km (WLTP), an improvement of 12km over the outgoing model. The range-topping i7 M70 xDrive churns out 680hp of power while reaching a maximum torque of 1,015Nm in Sport Mode and 1,100Nm with Sport Boost. It takes just 3.8 seconds to reach 100km/h from rest. The top speed is capped at 250km/h. The battery pack can last up to 686km (WLTP) on a full charge.

The BMW 7 Series has the same feature set across all three models. The dashboard houses a rhombus-shaped 17.6-inch central touchscreen infotainment system and a similar 14.6-inch passenger display. Software duties are handled by BMW OS X. Instead of a traditional digital instrument cluster, the three sedans get a Panoramic Vision projection surface running between the two A-pillars. Other features include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a 35-speaker B&W sound system, a fixed panoramic glass roof, a 31.3-inch 8K entertainment display at the back, four-zone climate control, Level 2 ADAS, and powered, heated, and massaging seats.

The ICE and all-electric models share the same exterior aesthetic. BMW has retouched the sleek split LED headlamps and the front bumper. The illuminated kidney grille has a more squared-off look. The i7 M70 xDrive gets a larger front air intake and 21-inch alloy wheels. The rest of the lineup gets 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, with the option of 22-inch alloys available at a premium. At the back, the LED tail lamps have a new look, and the bumper and tailgate have been made cleaner and smoother.

Final Thoughts

As mentioned earlier, the i7 50 xDrive M Sport will be assembled at BMW India’s Chennai plant, while the other two sedans will be imported via the CBU (Completely Built-up Unit) route. The ICE model rivals the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, while the two EVs go up against the Mercedes-Benz EQS and Porsche Taycan.
