Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has confirmed ‘Bayon’ as the name of its upcoming midsize SUV. The automaker says that the name ‘draws inspiration from Bayonne, a city in the French Basque Country, known for its distinctive character and dynamic spirit.’ Test mules of the SUV have been spotted in India on multiple occasions. Hyundai Bayon: Everything we know so far
The international-spec model of the Hyundai Bayon sold in Europe and Central Asia is a crossover version of the i20 hatchback. The test mules spotted in India have the design of a crossover as well. It will have the signature characteristics of an SUV, like an upright stance and a flat roofline. The test units also gave a glimpse of the squared-off wheel arches and pull-type door handles. Up front, the SUV appears to have a split headlamp arrangement inspired by the Hyundai Verna. An LED light bar connects the DRLs. The rear section also gets a sleek LED light bar.

The interior of the Hyundai Bayon was spotted on a recent road test. While the dashboard was heavily covered, the spy shots hinted towards a dual-screen setup comprising the central touchscreen instrument cluster and the digital instrument cluster. Hyundai could use twin 12.3-inch screens for this module. The steering has the illuminated four-dot logo signifying the letter ‘H’ in Morse code. The cabin will have a dual-tone colour theme.

Reports suggest that the Hyundai Bayon will get the Creta SUV’s 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine generates a maximum power output of 115hp. It can be mated to a 6-speed manual or CVT gearbox. On the Bayon, this engine will also be available in a CNG avatar, with the SUV deploying an underbody fuel tank to save boot space.

Mr Tarun Garg, Managing Director & CEO, HMIL, said, “With Hyundai BAYON, we are introducing more than a new SUV. BAYON represents a new mindset – one that reflects our ambition to create experiences that are intelligent, intuitive and meaningful for our customers. At Hyundai, we believe that every new product is an opportunity to push ourselves further, guided by our passion for creating mobility experiences that enrich people’s lives. With BAYON, we have once again challenged ourselves to pursue perfection in the details that matter, while staying true to our belief that technology creates its greatest value when it becomes effortless and seamlessly integrated into our customers’ everyday lives. We look forward to sharing more about Hyundai BAYON with India in the coming weeks.”

Final Thoughts
Hyundai has not mentioned any details about the launch window of the Bayon. We expect it to hit the market before the end of the year. It will be priced lower than the Creta. The entry-level variant could cost just over 9 lakh. Upon launch, the Bayon will rival the Tata Curvv and Citroen Basalt.
