Toyota India is set to take the wraps off its new compact SUV on April 3. Based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor will be a sub-4m SUV. The two SUVs will share the same powertrain and platform. The Taisor follows the Baleno/Glanza, Grand Vitara/HyRyder, and Innova HyCross/Invicto as the next offering under Suzuki and Toyota’s global partnership.

Since the Fronx is based on the Baleno, the Taiser will likely follow the design language of the Glanza. This means the SUV will feature a new bumper, redesigned headlamp clusters, new DRLs, and a refined front fascia. Along the sides, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor will receive a new design for the alloy wheels. At the back, the tail lamps and the bumper will be tweaked.
Inside, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor will be similar to the Fronx. The two SUVs will share the same dashboard layout but will feature different colour themes for the interior and the upholstery. The instrumentation will remain unchanged as well. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx comes with a 9.0-inch Smart Pro Play+ infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a Head-Up Display, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera.
Maruti offers two powertrain options for the Fronx – a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a 1.2-litre K Series naturally aspirated petrol engine. The former produces a maximum power output of 100hp and 147Nm of torque. Transmission options for this engine include a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The K Series engine churns out a maximum power output of 90hp and 113Nm of peak torque. This engine can also be mated to a 5-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is confirmed to offer the 1.2-litre K Series engine, but the chances of the Boosterjet engine making it to the SUV are uncertain as of now. This Booster engine was discontinued on the Baleno before making a return on the Fronx. Toyota will also launch a CNG version of the Taisor a few months down the line. The Fronx is already available with a CNG configuration, putting out 77.5hp and 98.5Nm. It delivers a mileage of 28.51 km/kg.

The Fronx is currently priced between Rs 7.51 lakh and Rs 13.04 lakh. The Taisor will come at a small premium over this price. Once launched, it will rival the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Hyundai Exter, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.
