Tata Motors has confirmed that it will equip the Safari and Harrier SUVs with a petrol powertrain. The petrol variants of the Tata Safari and Harrier will launch on December 9. The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection, turbo-petrol engine is a part of Tata’s ‘Hyperion’ powertrain series. It has been in the pipeline for over 5 years. It will make its debut on the Sierra on November 25, following which it will be added to the Safari and Harrier.

Tata Safari and Harrier: What to expect from the petrol engines
The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that will do duty on Tata Safari, Harrier, and Sierra was first showcased at AutoExpo 2023. This engine generates a maximum power output of 170hp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,5000rpm. It can be mated to a manual or automatic transmission. It remains to be seen whether Tata will go for a dual-clutch automatic gearbox for its two big SUVs.
Currently, the Tata Safari and Harrier are powered by a 2-litre diesel engine. This engine produces a maximum power output of 170hp and 350Nm of torque. It can be mated to manual and automatic gearboxes. The Safari and Harrier facelifts also get 3 terrain modes (Normal, Rough, Wet) and 3 driving modes (Eco, City, Sport). The Sierra SUV, set to launch on November 25, will also come with a new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. This engine will be offered with the entry-level variants of the SUV only. It won’t be available on the Safari and Harrier.
No other updates are expected on the Tata Safari and Harrier. The two SUVs share the same interior layout, features, and equipment list. There are two size options for the touchscreen infotainment system – 10.25-inch and 12.3-inch. There is a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster onboard as well. Other features include a 10-speaker JBL sound system, paddle shifters, wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and an ADAS package.
Recently, Tata updated the Curvv crossover with new creature comforts. It now comes with R-Comfort seats with passive ventilation, ‘Serenity Screen’ rear sunshades, ‘EasySip’ cup docks on the rear armrest, a dashboard insert in white carbon fibre finish, a ‘TwinZone Climate Concierge’ air conditioning system, and a lighter interior shade (Lalitpur Grey) with plush Benecke-Kaliko leatherette seats. The all-electric model also gets a ‘PureComfort’ rear co-passenger footrest and an ‘ErgoWing’ headrest.

Final Thoughts
Prices for the Tata Safari start at Rs 14.66 lakh and go up to Rs 25.96 lakh. Meanwhile, the Harrier range starts at Rs 14 lakh and goes up to Rs 25.25 lakh. The petrol variants of the two SUVs will be more affordable than their diesel counterparts. They will continue to rival the MG Hector Plus, Mahindra Scorpio N, Jeep Compass, and Hyundai Alcazar in India.
