International model of Maruti Suzuki Fronx gets a 1.5-litre engine

Maruti Suzuki Fronx was launched in India back in April at a starting price of Rs 7.47 lakh. The compact SUV is manufactured at the automaker’s production facility in Gujarat. Last month, Maruti shipped the first batch of the Fronx to overseas markets in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. It has now been revealed that the South African model of the Fronx has one key change under the hood.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx: Engine difference explained

In India, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is available in two engine options – the 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine and the 1.2-lire K Series engine. The former can produce a maximum power output of 100hp and 147Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The 1.2-litre K Series naturally aspirated petrol engine that can produce a maximum power output of 90hp and 113Nm peak torque. This engine can also be mated to a 5-speed manual or automatic gearbox.

However, the Fronx model sold in South Africa is powered by neither of these engines. Instead, it gets the 1.5-litre petrol engine that is also found on Grand Vitara, Brezza, XL6, and Ertiga. This engine can produce a maximum power output of 103hp and 138Nm of torque. This engine can be mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

There are no changes to the interior or the feature list on the South Africa-spec Maruti Suzuki Fronx. The SUV gets a 9.0-inch Smart Pro Play+ infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Head Up Display, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera.

The Fronx SUV is one of the several Maruti Suzuki offerings that is also shipped to foreign markets. The automaker also exports Swift, S-Presso, Dzire, Baleno, and the Grand Vitara out of India. In India, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx rivals Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Hyundai Exter, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.
