Maruti Suzuki Brezza: The journey so far
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza ‘Vitara’ entered the Indian market in March 2016 at a starting price of Rs 6.99 lakh. Its top-spec variant was priced at Rs 9.68 lakh. It was powered by an 89 hp producing 1.3-litre diesel engine sourced from Fiat. Its facelift version ditched this diesel engine for Maruti’s 1.5-litre K15B naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine was compatible with BS6 emission norms. This model was rebadged by Toyota as Urban Cruiser in 2020.
In 2022, Maruti updated the Brezza with a 2nd-generation model, which is still on sale. It dropped the ‘Vitara’ nomenclature for the SUV. The 1.5-litre petrol engine on the 2nd-gen model was updated with a dual-injector system. The SUV was also made available in a factory-fitted CNG powertrain. The instrumentation received significant upgrades as well, with the dashboard flaunting a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Other features like HUD, wireless charging, electric sunroof, automatic climate control, cruise control, and ambient lighting were added as well. In February 2025, Maruti updated the SUV to offer 6 airbags as a standard feature.

Maruti is currently road-testing a facelifted version of the 2nd-gen Brezza. It is expected to launch later this year. The new model will come with a revised grille, fog lamp housings, and bumpers. The tail lamp design may also receive a few tweaks. Not much is known about the SUV’s interior so far, but Maruti will introduce a new colour theme for the interior and add new features.
Mr Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “The Brezza story is one that has empowered the SUV era in India. Conceptualised, designed and developed with new-age customer aspirations, the Brezza’s authentic SUV DNA and feature-loaded cabin have constantly redefined customer expectations with each new model launch. As we reflect on its journey through the decade on its 10th anniversary, it’s worth noting that the Brezza has not just consistently retained its position as India’s most loved SUV; it has also steadily expanded the market share for the entire compact SUV segment to 31% contribution to today.”
