Mahindra Thar’s new entry-level variants have been in high demand ever since they launched earlier this year. The 2WD variants of the Thar were added to the lineup earlier this year. In the following months, their prices have been hiked twice. Launched at Rs 9.99 lakh, prices for Mahindra Thar 2WD now start at Rs 10.55 lakh.

According to certain reports, the current waiting period of the diesel variant of the Thar 2WD is 17 months. Meanwhile, buyers only have to wait for a month to get the petrol variant of the 2WD lifestyle SUV.
Mahindra Thar comes in three powertrain options. The 1.5-litre diesel engine found in the entry-level variants offers a maximum power output of 118hp and 300Nm torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The base variants are only available in 2WD.
The 2.0-litre petrol engine puts out 152hp and 300Nm while the 2.2-litre diesel engine produces 130hp and 300Nm. These engines are offered with a 6-speed manual as well as automatic transmission. The diesel variant is exclusively available in a 4WD configuration, while the petrol engine gets a 2WD option as well.
Inside, the 2WD Thar misses out on the 4×4 gear selector and gets some additional storage space in its place. Apart from that, it gets the auto start/stop function and a lock/unlock button. The 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay has been retained from the 4WD variant.
Apart from the missing gear selector, there is no difference between the 2WD and 4WD Thar in terms of design and layout style – both inside and out. The 2WD naturally misses out on the 4×4 variants. Mahindra also introduced three new colours with the base variants – Blazing Bronze, Aquamarine, and Everest White.
